AASBO Chief School Financial Officer (CSFO)
Mentor Program
The role of the CSFO is one of the most demanding and difficult positions in the school district’s organization. AASBO is committed to the success of new CSFOs and the school districts they serve. We want to ensure a positive start for each new CSFO by aiding during the first five years of their employment. As part of this program, experienced CSFOs are assigned as mentors to assist through personal contact, site visits, and electronic communication. This mentor serves as a coach and can provide one on one training and assistance during the first years in the position.
AASBO also provides additional workshops and training in a group setting for new CSFOs. These sessions are held on a regular basis to ensure that new CSFOs have the tools and training they need to be successful in their jobs. The program focuses on the role and responsibilities of the CSFO in the financial management of their district and provides both a detailed and global view of the financial operations of Alabama school districts. Topics for the training include:
- Role and duties of the CSFO
- Understanding Alabama ‘s educational laws and regulations
- Funding for Alabama School Districts
- Understanding the financial accounting software
- Development of the annual budget
- Financial reporting requirements
- Analysis of financial information
- Standard practices and procedures
- Effective management practices
- Working with your board and superintendent

Our goal is to provide programs and services that will enhance the professionalism of school business management officials and to improve the performance of the school districts in which they work.
